Benefits of buying a used catamaran

The price of a new catamaran is often high, while a used catamaran can be up to 40% cheaper, depending on its age. Used catamaran insurance is also less expensive than that of a new boat. So, by opting to buy a used boat, you’ll save money without sacrificing the pleasure of being on the water! However, you need to be certain of the condition of the hull, structure, rigging, engine and sails, as well as the operation of all technical and comfort equipment, from navigation electronics to galley equipment.

Sail Tahiti rigorously selects the pre-owned catamarans and trimarans we offer. We check their condition and inventory, and communicate with you in complete transparency. You can count on us to offer you a well-maintained pre-owned catamaran.

Used catamarans versatility

Versatility is another major advantage of pre-owned catamarans. Whether you’re planning a round-the-world trip, living aboard in Polynesia or enjoying your catamaran on vacation, performance and stability are the strengths of modern cruising multihulls. More reassuring than a monohull, with a shallower draft for approaching motus and, above all, life on the water with 360° vision from the saloon and cockpit, catamarans have undeniable advantages for sailing programs in Polynesia.

There are many brands of catamarans and trimarans in the market, each expressing a slightly different approach of blue-water cruising : Lagoon catamarans, Fountaine Pajot, Excess Catamarans, Nautitech, Leopard Catamarans, Seawind, Rapido Trimarans, Neel Trimarans, Corsair Marine...so how do you know which one is for you?

How to choose your used catamaran

Renowned for its stability, a pre-owned catamaran is perfect for all your cruising needs. Speed is not forgotten either: as soon as you ease off the throttle, a multihull speeds across the water thanks to its smaller wetted surface area. It’s the ideal boat for sailing in the trade winds, even if purists will regret the monohulls’ ability to go upwind. But make no mistake: a racing monohull like a Beneteau First will certainly sail better upwind than a catamaran, but its upwind performance is almost identical to that of a cruising monohull. If equipped with daggerboards or well-worked appendages, as on the Seawind, Excess or Neel trimarans, the multihull will deliver excellent performance at all points of sail.

When choosing a pre-owned catamaran, the first thing to consider is your sailing program. Sail Tahiti’s DNA is to advise you according to your wishes, the composition of your crew and your level of experience. To find out more, read the article we published on this subject: Is your catamaran comfortable or fast?

Making the right choice also means ensuring the technical condition of your future catamaran. To do this, we carry out an initial detailed analysis of the pre-owned boats we offer for sale. Our technical team is able to provide you with precise estimates and procedures for any repairs, modifications to the layout of your future boat or the addition of new equipment. As dealers, we have access to original spare parts and assembly protocols from the shipyards: so nothing is left to chance to ensure that your boat contributes fully to the success of your project: furnishings, electronics, solar panels, lithium batteries…

Once you’ve chosen your boat, we’ll help you set up and monitor your purchase offer. This is of course subject to a fully satisfactory appraisal by an independent expert. You can find a list of the main surveyors and shipyards in Polynesia here.

Finally, our team can also advise you on the financing and insurance of your boat.
