Tahiti & Moorea – The secret lagoons and gardens of French Polynesia

Beginning and ending in Tahiti, this itinerary explores some of the best spots in Tahiti and Moorea.

Moorea rises magically out of the ocean like a cathedral. High, sharp, green spires crowned by clouds. Deep valleys with waterfalls and fern covered cliffs. Peaceful meadows flanked by mountains of emerald green and sparkling blue lagoons. The island really is this beautiful.

Tahiti is the bigger of the two islands, dominating the surrounding ocean. The interior is a wealth of valleys and peaks, rivers and waterfalls, little explored. This itinerary takes in just a couple of our favourite anchorages in Tahiti.

The first part of the journey takes you to two of Moorea’s famous bays and a world class surf spot, combining lagoon and mountain activities with some culture and exploration. Following this you’ll head back to Tahiti to explore the “Fenua Aihere” or savage south side of the island.

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive on your boat …. choose to relax or have us arrange scuba diving or some holopuni sailing for you!

Day 2

Sail to Cook’s Bay on the island of Moorea, one of 2 famous bays on this island. The crossing takes just a couple of hours, giving you time to have lunch at the Moorea Beach Café and to spend the afternoon enjoying the lagoon.

Day 3

Sail from Cook’s Bay to Oponohu Bay, the 2nd of the deep bays on Moorea’s north coast and even more magical. You’ll be surrounded by cliffs covered with tropical vegetation. During the afternoon you can swim with eagle and leopard rays!

Day 4

At the south side of Oponohu Bay you can walk into the lush valley on a well marked trail. This is called the ancestors trail, and links several exceptional archeological sites. Walking through this luxuriant nature surrounded by ancient marae is a fascinating link to plolynesian history. The more adventurous can try out ziplining before walking back to the anchorage for and evening under the stars.

Day 5

Sail to Haapiti where you will anchor on a long white sandbank. The lagoon on this side of Moorea is large and offers plenty of snorkelling opportunities. The wave in the channel is one of the best surfing spots in French Polynesia. Best for experienced surfers, so if you’re a beginner just head to the pass in your dingy and enjoy watching the locals show their stuff.

Day 6

Spend your day relaxing in the lagoon, swimming or fishing, or take a walk to Haapiti village to hidden between palm trees and flowers.

Day 7

Sail back towards Tahiti around the south side of Moorea and cross the chanel to the Botanical Gardens – a sail of around 30nm. The botanical jardines are a wonderful collection of trees, ferns, flowers and indigenous plans, and one of Tahiti’s secret spots. Mostly uninhabited, this side of Tahiti has kept the charm of a previous era. You’ll be perfectly placed to watch a beautiful sunet over Moorea.

Day 8

During the morning, take the time to explore the gardens before heading back to your boat for the sail to Teahupoo. This is the mythical surf spot of international reputation and the gateway to the Fenau Aihere or ‘savage country’: the south coast of Tahiti which is almost completely uninhabited and without road access.

Day 9

Head off to see the local and international surfers master Teahupoo’s mythical wave, one of the most powerful in the world, before heading further south to explore the cliffs and lagoon of Fenua Aihere. This exceptional coastline is seldom visited and completely unspoiled. It seems as if time has stopped watching the waves break on the rose coral at the base of vertigenious green cliffs.

Day 10

Head off early for your return sail, following the west coast of Tahiti, north towards the Taina marina for an evening out in one of Tahiti’s many restaurants. A return to civilisation after 10 days spent far from the pressures of city life.
